Career Fest week. A different kind of input, stepping out of the studio and into conversations about where design practice actually lands in the world. STP visa talk, exhibition making talk, a curating panel, and a session on designers in non-designer roles. Got voice recordings of the key moments.
The through-line across all the sessions: portfolio should show research not just design outcomes. Sense-making is a core design skill. Agility matters. These aren't new ideas but hearing them from practitioners in different roles made them feel more concrete.
WEEK 8
Industry Talks
STP visa, exhibition making, curating, and designers in non-designer roles. Key theme: show research, not just outcomes.
5 March
Talks from Grab Head of Design, Creative Technologist Marissa, and Supabase Design Lead Jonny Summers Muir on craft, taste, and designers who code.
The Claude Code meetup on 5 March was a different register, more technical, more about how the tools are actually being used by practitioners. The Grab Head of Design framed quality as a systems problem: craft + care + belief. Marissa on taste as knowing when something is wrong and when to stop. Jonny Summers Muir on being a designer who codes, and how that changes what you can ask of tools.
Kiasu Dash did a lightning demo, kids as product clients, which was its own kind of design lesson.
